WordPress vs Wix in 2026: which should you choose?

Quick answer

Wix is the faster, simpler option if you want to launch a small brochure site yourself this weekend and never touch hosting. WordPress is the stronger long term choice if you want to own your site, grow it, rank it and avoid platform lock in. For most South African businesses that see their website as a sales tool, WordPress with Elementor offers more control for a similar or lower running cost.

Ease of use: Wix wins on day one

Credit where it is due: Wix is one of the easiest ways to get a decent looking site online. You pick a template or describe your business to the AI builder, drag elements around and publish. Hosting, SSL and updates are handled for you.

In January 2026 Wix announced Wix Harmony, its new AI website builder. It combines prompt based site generation with the familiar visual editor, and an AI agent called Aria that can make changes from a simple colour tweak to a full page redesign. For a solo owner with no budget for a designer, it is genuinely impressive.

WordPress has a steeper start. Someone has to set up hosting, install WordPress, choose a theme and configure plugins. Once a professional has built the site in Elementor, though, editing text, images and sections is just as visual as Wix.

Cost: closer than you think

According to Website Builder Expert’s September 2026 pricing review, US annual prices are about US$17 a month for Light, US$29 for Core, US$39 for Business and US$159 for Business Elite. Wix says prices and currency vary by location, so check the rand price shown to you. Paid plans include a free domain for the first year.

At roughly R16.60 to the dollar, the Business plan you need for a serious online store works out at around R650 a month before any apps. Many Wix features rely on paid apps from the Wix App Market, which add up.

WordPress software is free. Quality South African hosting, a domain and Elementor Pro (from about US$60 a year) usually cost less than a mid tier Wix plan. The bigger cost is the initial build and maintenance, which is why many businesses use an agency.

Ownership and lock in

This is the biggest difference. A Wix site lives on Wix. You cannot download it and run it on another host. If you outgrow Wix or the pricing changes, you rebuild from scratch on a new platform and redirect your URLs.

WordPress is open source under the GPL. Your files, database and content belong to you. You can move to a different host, hand the site to a new agency or keep a full offline backup whenever you like.

SEO and AI search visibility

Wix has improved its SEO a great deal over the years. It handles meta tags, sitemaps, structured data for some page types, redirects and mobile friendly templates, and Wix Harmony lists SEO and GEO tools as built in. A well maintained Wix site can rank.

WordPress still gives you more. With Rank Math or Yoast you control schema markup for every page type, canonical rules, breadcrumbs and indexing at a granular level. You also control the server: caching, image compression, CDN, security headers and hosting location. That matters for Core Web Vitals and for page speed on South African mobile networks. When we audit sites, technical SEO fixes are simply easier to apply on WordPress.

Ecommerce

Wix supports online stores on Core and higher plans, with more advanced ecommerce on Business Elite. It is fine for a small catalogue.

WordPress with WooCommerce is free to install and scales to large catalogues. It plugs into South African gateways like Yoco, Payfast and Paystack, plus local couriers. The Yoco plugin, for example, takes card and Instant EFT payments in rands with no monthly fee, just per transaction rates.

Flexibility and integrations

Wix has a good app market, and Wix Harmony can generate custom components from prompts. But you are always working inside what Wix allows.

WordPress powers bookings, memberships, LMS courses, job boards, directories and multilingual sites with mature plugins, and a developer can build anything custom. If your website needs to grow with your business, that headroom counts.

Maintenance and security

Wix handles security and updates. You never patch anything. That is a real plus for very small businesses.

WordPress needs regular updates, backups and sensible security settings. On good hosting with a maintenance plan, this is routine. Ignored, it becomes a risk. Be honest with yourself about who will look after it.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Wix if you are a sole trader or hobbyist who wants to build and run a simple site yourself with no technical help.
  • Choose Wix if you want a quick AI generated starting point and are comfortable staying on Wix long term.
  • Choose WordPress if organic search, Google Ads landing pages or AI search visibility are important to how you win customers.
  • Choose WordPress if you want to own your site, choose your own host and avoid rebuilding when you grow.
  • Choose WordPress with WooCommerce if you sell online in South Africa and want local payment gateways without platform fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress better than Wix for SEO?

For most businesses, yes. Both cover the basics, but WordPress gives you deeper control over schema, technical settings and server speed. Wix is easier but more limited when you need advanced fixes.

Can I move my Wix website to WordPress?

Not directly. Wix does not export a working site, so content is usually copied across and the design rebuilt in WordPress. Set up 301 redirects from old Wix URLs to protect your rankings.

Is Wix cheaper than WordPress?

Wix is cheaper to start if you build it yourself. Over a few years, WordPress hosting and plugins are often cheaper than a mid tier Wix plan plus paid apps, though a professional build adds an upfront cost.

What is Wix Harmony?

Wix Harmony is the AI website builder Wix announced in January 2026. It generates sites from prompts and lets you refine them in the visual editor, with an AI agent called Aria.

Does Wix work for South African online stores?

Wix can run a small store. Check which local payment providers Wix offers for your account before you commit. WooCommerce has plugins for South African gateways such as Yoco, Payfast and Paystack.
