WordPress vs Squarespace in 2026: an honest comparison

WordPress vs Squarespace in 2026: plan prices, transaction fees, design, SEO and ownership compared to help South African businesses choose.

WordPress vs Squarespace in 2026: an honest comparison

Quick answer

Squarespace is the better pick if you want a beautiful, low maintenance portfolio or small business site that you build and manage yourself. WordPress is the better pick if you need full ownership, deeper SEO control, local South African payment options and room to grow. Squarespace trades flexibility for polish; WordPress trades a little convenience for control.

Design: Squarespace’s strongest card

Squarespace earned its reputation with clean, modern templates. Typography, spacing and image handling look professional straight out of the box, which is why photographers, creatives, restaurants and boutique studios love it. It is hard to make a Squarespace site look bad.

Squarespace’s Blueprint AI asks about your business name, type, brand and goals, then recommends a design and builds a working site you refine in the editor. Its Design Intelligence tools let you switch page layouts with one click. For a DIY owner, that is a very good starting point.

WordPress with Elementor Pro can match that polish and go well beyond it, but the result depends on who builds it. A good designer gives you a site that fits your brand and customer journey exactly. A poor one gives you a cluttered theme. That is the trade off.

Cost and transaction fees

Squarespace lists four plans. On annual billing they come to roughly US$19, US$29, US$49 and US$99 a month, rising to about US$25, US$39, US$65 and US$139 on monthly billing. At around R16.60 to the dollar in late 2026, Core works out at roughly R480 a month.

Watch the fees. Basic charges a 2% transaction fee on online store sales. Core and higher drop that to 0%, but digital content and memberships carry their own fee on Core (5%) and Plus (1%). Card processing through Squarespace Payments is extra, from 2.5% to 2.9% plus 30 US cents depending on plan.

WordPress and WooCommerce charge no platform transaction fees. You pay your payment gateway, such as Yoco or Payfast, and your hosting. For South African sellers, that usually works out cheaper as sales grow.

Ownership and portability

Squarespace lets you export some content, mainly pages and blog posts, as an XML file that WordPress can import. Design, layouts and many Squarespace specific features do not come across, and some content needs to be fixed after import. In practice, leaving Squarespace means rebuilding the design.

WordPress is GPL licensed open source software. You own the files and database outright and can move to any host or agency whenever you choose.

SEO and AI search

Squarespace handles the essentials well: editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, automatic sitemaps, SSL and mobile friendly templates. Squarespace has also added an AI Visibility feature that tracks how your brand appears in AI search, with prompt runs included on each plan.

Where it falls short is depth. You have limited control over structured data, server performance, caching, image delivery and security headers. WordPress plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast give you page by page schema, redirect management and indexing rules, and your host gives you server level control. If you compete for search terms in a busy local market, that extra control adds up.

Ecommerce in South Africa

Squarespace commerce is tidy for small catalogues, digital products and memberships. The questions for a South African store are payment options and fees, so check which gateways are available to your account in rands before you commit.

WooCommerce on WordPress has dedicated plugins for Yoco, Payfast and Paystack. The Yoco plugin, for instance, accepts local cards and Instant EFT in rands with no monthly fee, only per transaction rates. You can also connect local couriers and accounting tools.

Flexibility and integrations

Squarespace keeps things simple by limiting what you can add. There is an extensions marketplace and some room for custom code, but you work within Squarespace’s structure.

WordPress handles almost any requirement: bookings, LMS courses, directories, multilingual sites, client portals or custom integrations with your CRM. If your website plans are likely to grow, WordPress gives you headroom.

Maintenance

Squarespace takes care of hosting, security and updates, and that is a real advantage if nobody on your team wants to think about it.

WordPress needs ongoing updates, backups and security care. With good hosting and a maintenance plan, it is routine and predictable.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Squarespace if you are a photographer, artist, small studio or restaurant that values visual polish and wants to manage the site yourself.
  • Choose Squarespace if you want zero maintenance and your site is unlikely to need custom features.
  • Choose WordPress if search traffic and lead generation are central to your business.
  • Choose WordPress if you sell online in South Africa and want local gateways without platform transaction fees.
  • Choose WordPress if you want to own your site and never be forced into a rebuild to leave a platform.

Frequently asked questions

Is Squarespace better than WordPress?

Squarespace is easier and needs no maintenance. WordPress is more flexible, gives better SEO control and lets you own your site. The better choice depends on whether convenience or control matters more to you.

Does Squarespace charge transaction fees?

Yes, on some plans. Basic charges 2% on online store sales, while Core and higher charge 0% for physical products. Card processing fees apply on top, and digital content has separate fees on some plans.

Can I move my Squarespace site to WordPress?

Partly. Squarespace exports some content as an XML file that WordPress can import, but the design and some features must be rebuilt. Plan 301 redirects to keep your rankings.

What is Squarespace Blueprint AI?

Blueprint AI is Squarespace’s AI site builder. It asks about your business and goals, suggests a design and creates a starter site that you then edit in Squarespace.

Is Squarespace good for SEO?

It covers the basics well and can rank. For advanced schema, speed tuning and technical fixes, WordPress offers more control.
