WordPress vs HubSpot CMS: which is better in 2026?

WordPress vs HubSpot CMS in 2026: real costs, ownership, SEO control and CRM features compared, with clear advice for South African businesses.

WordPress vs HubSpot CMS: which is better in 2026?

Quick answer

WordPress is the better choice for most South African businesses that want full ownership, low running costs and complete SEO control. HubSpot Content Hub wins when your sales and marketing team already lives in the HubSpot CRM and you want website, email and reporting under one login. Expect to pay far more for HubSpot as you scale, and expect to put in more maintenance effort with WordPress.

Cost: the gap widens as you grow

WordPress itself costs nothing. It is open source software released under the GPL, which gives you the right to run, study, modify and share it. Your real costs are hosting, a domain, premium plugins such as Elementor Pro (plans start from about US$60 a year according to Elementor) and someone to keep it updated.

HubSpot Content Hub has a genuinely useful free tier, but it carries HubSpot branding and caps you at 30 website pages and 100 blog posts. Starter removes the branding. The jump comes at Professional, listed from about US$450 a month with three core seats included. At late October 2026 exchange rates of roughly R16.60 to the dollar, that is more than R7,000 a month before VAT, every month, for as long as the site runs. Enterprise starts at about US$1,500 a month.

For a small or medium business in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, that monthly bill often costs more per year than a complete bespoke WordPress build plus hosting.

Ownership and lock in

With WordPress you own everything. Move hosts, change agencies or take a full backup at any time. Nothing stops you from walking away with your site intact.

HubSpot is a hosted platform. You can export page, post and template HTML, plus blog data as CSV or Excel, according to HubSpot’s own knowledge base. That helps, but it is not the same as picking up a working site and moving it. HubSpot templates use HubSpot’s own templating language and modules, so a move to another CMS usually means rebuilding the design and remapping URLs.

SEO control

Both platforms handle the basics: titles, meta descriptions, clean URLs, SSL and XML sitemaps. HubSpot adds helpful on page recommendations and, in beta, an AEO tool that tracks how your brand shows up in AI answers.

WordPress goes further when you need it to. With plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math you get granular control over schema markup, canonical tags, redirects, robots rules and indexing. You can also tune server level performance, caching and security headers on your own hosting, which matters for Core Web Vitals. HubSpot manages the server for you, which is convenient but leaves less room to optimise.

Marketing automation and CRM

This is where HubSpot wins, and it is a real win. When Content Hub sits alongside Marketing Hub or Sales Hub, every form fill, page view and email open lands on a contact record automatically. You can personalise page content by lifecycle stage, run A/B tests on higher tiers and trace a lead from first visit to closed deal without stitching tools together.

WordPress can connect to HubSpot, Zoho, Mailchimp or most other CRMs through plugins. It works well, but it is a connection, not a single platform. If your sales team already pays for HubSpot and uses it daily, Content Hub removes friction.

Design and flexibility

WordPress with Elementor gives you almost unlimited layout freedom, and the tens of thousands of free plugins in the WordPress.org directory cover bookings, memberships, directories, LMS courses and ecommerce through WooCommerce.

HubSpot offers a drag and drop editor and a theme marketplace. Marketers can update pages without code, but custom functionality usually needs a HubSpot developer, and there are fewer of those in South Africa than WordPress developers.

AI features

HubSpot leans heavily into AI. Its pricing page lists a Customer Agent, Data Agent, AI blog writer, AI image generator, AI translation and content remix, all drawing on a monthly pool of HubSpot Credits. These are polished and tied to your CRM data.

On WordPress, AI arrives through tools like Elementor AI and its agent, Angie, plus a wide range of SEO and writing plugins. You pick what you need and skip what you do not.

Maintenance and security

HubSpot handles hosting, updates, SSL and uptime. You never worry about plugin conflicts. That is a fair advantage for teams with no technical support.

WordPress needs regular core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security hardening. With a good host and a maintenance plan this is routine, but it cannot be ignored. Most WordPress security issues come from outdated plugins, not WordPress core.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose WordPress if you want to own your site, keep monthly costs predictable in rands, need custom functionality or ecommerce, or want detailed technical SEO control.
  • Choose WordPress if your marketing team uses a mix of tools and does not need everything inside one CRM.
  • Choose HubSpot Content Hub if your business already runs on HubSpot Marketing or Sales Hub and wants personalised content and closed loop reporting.
  • Choose HubSpot Content Hub if you have the budget for Professional tier pricing and no appetite for any website maintenance.
  • Consider both: many companies run WordPress for the website and connect HubSpot CRM through the official plugin for forms, chat and contact tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Is HubSpot CMS better than WordPress for SEO?

Not by default. Both cover the SEO basics. WordPress gives you more technical control over schema, redirects, server performance and indexing. HubSpot gives you simpler on page guidance inside the editor.

How much does HubSpot CMS cost in South Africa?

HubSpot prices in US dollars. Content Hub Professional is listed from about US$450 a month, which is more than R7,000 a month at late 2026 exchange rates, before VAT. There is also a free tier and a low cost Starter tier with page limits.

Can I use HubSpot CRM with a WordPress website?

Yes. HubSpot’s official WordPress plugin connects forms, live chat and analytics to your HubSpot CRM, so you keep WordPress ownership and still get contact tracking.

Can I move my website from HubSpot to WordPress?

Yes. You can export page and blog HTML and blog data from HubSpot, but the design and modules usually need to be rebuilt in WordPress. Plan proper 301 redirects to protect your rankings.

Is WordPress really free?

The WordPress software is free and open source. You still pay for hosting, a domain, any premium plugins or themes, and ongoing maintenance.
